Check the local source, time, pollutant and advisory before a planned walk. AirNow’s US guidance identifies children among groups that may be more sensitive when air quality worsens, but its coloured categories and numbers belong to the US AQI. Use the health advice published for your own country or region.

Make a proportionate plan

When an official advisory is less favourable, consider a shorter outing, a less strenuous activity, another time or an indoor alternative. There is no honest one-size-fits-all cutoff for every child, route and health situation. The reading is decision support, not a diagnosis or a promise about an individual response.

Know when to ask a professional

For a child with respiratory or other health concerns, follow the family’s clinical advice rather than a generic article. Seek professional medical guidance for symptoms or questions about a planned activity. WHO notes that air pollution is an environmental health issue that calls for action beyond individual families as well.
